About
An Open champion's name, beside the 18th green
Willie Auchterlonie was 21 when he won the 1893 Open at Prestwick, the second-youngest champion after Young Tom Morris. Like many St Andrews professionals of his day, he was a clubmaker first: he trained with R. Forgan & Son, ran his own workshops in the town, and later served for decades as honorary professional to The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. His brother Laurie won the 1902 US Open.
The shop that carries the name today stands on Golf Place, less than 100 yards from the 18th green of the Old Course, and dates its business to 1895. It is a working golf shop rather than a museum: a large, busy store with a separate ladies' section, a pre-owned department and its own workshop.
Why stop here
For a travelling golfer, the services matter more than the souvenirs. The shop offers rental clubs from Callaway, TaylorMade and Titleist, custom fitting with TrackMan, and workshop repairs such as regripping, shaft work and loft and lie adjustment. That makes it a sensible first call if clubs are delayed in transit, or if something needs fixing before a round on the Links.
