Overview
Muirfield Golf Course
Muirfield Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 70 championship links course located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Stretching 7,245 yards from the championship tees (6,728 yards from men's tees), the course features a distinctive routing where the opening nine holes circle clockwise around the property's perimeter, while the back nine run anti-clockwise on an inner circuit. The course is home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, whose history dates to 1744 when they codified the original Rules of Golf at Leith Links.
Originally designed by Old Tom Morris in 1891 with 16 holes, Muirfield has undergone significant refinements by renowned architects Harry Colt (1925), Tom Simpson (1930s), and Martin Hawtree (2011). The course has hosted 16 Open Championships, including the first Open played over 72 holes in 1892, plus 11 Amateur Championships and the Ryder, Walker, and Curtis Cups. Most recently, Muirfield hosted the AIG Women's Open Championship in August 2022, cementing its reputation as one of golf's most historic championship venues.
