Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle is a historic visitor attraction in the heart of Angus, Scotland, rather than a golf course. The castle has been the ancestral seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372 and is promoted as a place to explore more than 650 years of Scottish history. The estate includes the castle, gardens and surrounding grounds, with the Douglas firs highlighted as a notable landscape feature.

Visitors can take guided tours through rooms reflecting medieval, Renaissance and Victorian history, including the medieval Crypt, 17th-century Chapel, Drawing Room and Royal Apartments of The Queen Mother. Glamis was an inspiration for William Shakespeare’s *Macbeth* and has welcomed Mary, Queen of Scots, and James V. It was also the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, while Princess Margaret was born at the castle in 1930.

Facilities include the Castle Kitchen Restaurant, Pavilion Gift Shop, castle gardens and grounds, and wedding spaces within the historic building. The estate also hosts simulated game-shooting days on the surrounding Strathmore Estate. Gardens and Grounds admission for the advertised snowdrop activities is £6 for adults, £3 for children aged five to 16, and free for children under five. Friends of Glamis membership costs £100 for up to five people.

Published opening hours are 10am–5pm until 18 October, with last entry and tours at 4.30pm; from 19 October to 1 November, the castle opens at 10am and last entry and tours are at 3.30pm.
